Tommy James Smith

In Loving Memory of Tommy James Smith: Born: January 23, 1983, Eagle Butte, SD

Spirit World: November 10, 2012, Bismarck, ND

Tommy James Smith was born January 23, 1983 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota to Fred Smith and Cheryl Red Bear. He spent his early childhood in Aberdeen, but the family moved back to Eagle Butte where Tommy attended grade school and high school.

Tommy enjoyed high school, playing football and making memories with his classmates. He considered everyone he met his friend. During the summer and fall, Tommy liked to help fellow ranchers do cowboy work. He liked to help his “Hunka” brothers and families during branding season.

Tommy worked construction for years before he settled down into the role of full-time DAD. He loved his children very much; they were his whole world. He called his boys his “BB Gunn” (Jaxson), “Squirt Gunn” (Tucker) and “Dart Gunn” (Chase). He spent the last part of his life taking care of his children. Tommy and his family moved to Bismarck, ND in November of 2011, and to stay connected to his brother and nephews, they would play X-Box online. He always looked forward to that. He was his nephew, Jake Frazier’s biggest fan.

Tommy was a die-hard “Dallas Cowboys” fan and was an active softball, dart and pool player. He liked every genre of music and was always “jamming” to different songs. He liked fishing and camping, but was always willing to lend a hand to any of his friends and family. Tommy was a joker and was always making jokes to lift the spirits of his friends and family. He had various nick-names: TJ, Tommy Gunn, Tommila, The Gunn, but his favorite name was “DAD”. His Lakota name is “Mato Luta Hoksila” (Red Bear Boy).

Tommy will be deeply missed by his wife, Marlo (Yellow Fox) Smith; his children, Eveline, Jaxson Clay, Tucker “James” Mato Topa and Chase Austin; his mother, Cheryl Red Bear; his father, Fred Smith; siblings, Denise, Clay, Cameron, Winnie, Greg, Dugan, Reagan and Chera Smith and Iris Hill; nephews, Jake Frazier, Lennox, Rocklin, Braylon and Angel; nieces, Mariah Frazier, Hayzil Yellow Fox, Abby and A’Leigh Red Dog, Magedeline Briggs, Rozllyn and Bailey.
