Duke Makes Room
Funeral services for Duke Makes Room, 74, of Rapid City, formerly of Eagle Butte, was held Saturday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m., MST, at the Lakota Cultural Center, Eagle Butte. Burial followed at St. Peter’s Episcopal Cemetery, Thunder Butte, under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home, Mobridge. Met at the 4-mile Jct. 4:00 p.m. Friday to process to the cultural center for an all-night wake with services beginning at 7:00 p.m. Duke entered the spirit world January 2, 2013 in Rapid City.
David Allen Makes Room was born July 7, 1938 at Cheyenne Agency, South Dakota to Moses Makes Room and Margaret Roach. He was raised in Iron Lightning, and attended school mostly in Faith, South Dakota.
Duke, as he was commonly called most of his life, lived in Eagle Butte in the early 1960’s. He loved to sing Lakota songs and play the harmonica. Duke also enjoyed singing gospel music and his favorite song was “Everybody Ought To Know Who Jesus Is”.
In 1987, Duke had a stroke, and afterward was a resident of the Golden Living Center in Mobridge, South Dakota He was moved to the Golden Living Center, Prairie Hills, in Rapid City in 2002, where he lived up until the time of his passing.
Duke is survived by his sister, Della (Enoch) Brings Plenty of Eagle Butte; step-brother, Percy Phillips; step-sisters, Evelyn Phillips and Clevia Red Wing along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and cousins.
Duke was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Roach and Moses Makes Room; 3 brothers, Merle, Roland and Wayne Makes Room and other extended Tiospaye.
