Burial followed at the Eagle Butte Cemetery. An all-night wake began with prayer services at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the cultural center. Melvin entered the spirit world January 4, 2013 in Mobridge.

Melvin Aaron LaBlanc was born to Juanita (Useful Heart) and Edward LaBlanc on September 19, 1943 at Cheyenne Agency, SD.

Melvin attended school at Cheyenne Agency and Eagle Butte. He was a hard worker, taking care of his family. He worked as a farm/ranch hand around the Eagle Butte area, the Eagle Butte Coop, Elevator, CRST Sanitary Landfill and the Eagle Butte School Cafeteria. He liked to watch rodeo, professional wrestling and liked listening to country western music. He loved his children and grandchildren and did all that he could for them.

A very special little girl came into his life at the age of 3 months old. Mikeyla Rose was the light of his life and they were blessed to have eight long years as granddaughter and “lala” as she called him. She was not his biological grandchild, but his loving heart accepted her as his own. He wanted her to be adopted into the family.

Melvin was a good man helping people any way he could; a place to sleep and something to eat.

Melvin married Freida Holy Bull in 1964, and to this marriage three children were born, son, Aaron, daughter, Josephine (Josie) and daughter, Dyan (deceased).

Melvin suffered his third stroke in May of 2012, this being the worst of his strokes. He spent a month in the Rapid City Regional Hospital and then was moved to the Golden Living Center in Mobridge, SD, where he spent the remainder of his life.

Those left to mourn his passing include his son Aaron; grandchildren, Leon and Amy, Eagle Butte, Stephanie LaBlanc (Joseph) Williams, Jessica LaBlanc (Tyrone) Bell; newborn great-granddaughter, Jamiya Renee Williams, Fairbanks, AK; daughter, Josie; granddaughter, Mikeyla, Eagle Butte; brother, Ernest “Oliver” LaBlanc, Eagle Butte; sisters, Emmaline Rock, Pryor, MT, Lillian Brown, Theresa and Charlotte LaBlanc, Eagle Butte.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents Juanita and Edward LaBlanc; daughter, Dyan; brothers, Robert “Bobbie” and Phillip Leroy; sisters, Isabelle, Ethel, Josephine and Darlene.
