“Chuck” Dennis R. Dog Eagle, Jr. was born October 28, 1940 at Cheyenne Agency, South Dakota to Dennis and Rosalie (Counting) Dog Eagle, Sr. Chuck grew up in the Bear Creek community and attended school at Cheyenne Agency and Eagle Butte. At an early age, he learned to ride horses, as that was going to be his trade in life. His true passion was to be a “cowboy”. Chuck helped his parents and neighbors in the Armstrong County area for many years until they moved back to the Bear Creek area.

Chuck was a “Jack of all trades”. Throughout his life, he worked various jobs, which included: ranching, full-time mechanic, janitor, TWEP supervisor, horse whisperer, wood cutter for the elderly program and many other jobs. Every morning, he looked forward to his morning phone calls from his cousins, always with a cup of coffee in his hand. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, and enjoyed driving to the unit in Armstrong to check on the “Bessie’s”, making water holes for them, and feeding them and the horses.

In January of 2012, he was diagnosed with leukemia, but up until the time of his death, he remained faithful to his livestock in Armstrong County and spending time with family and friends. Chuck entered the Big Arena in the Sky on December 2, 2012, at his home in Eagle Butte. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Grateful for having shared his life is his wife of 27 years, Shirley (Dupris) Dog Eagle of Eagle Butte; his children, Shelly (Dog Eagle) Peterson (Mike), Rhonda Creswell, James Dog Eagle (Jannon), Dusty Scott (Tenielle), Blaine Dog Eagle, Gilreth Dog Eagle all of Pierre, SD, Doreen Dog Eagle (LeRay Skinner) of Mandan, ND, Kracy Dog Eagle (Ramona Dupris), Richard Dog Eagle (Carmen O’Neal), Efton Dog Eagle and Samantha Dog Eagle (Arthur McLane); sisters, Gladys Turning Heart of Lantry, SD, adopted brother, Burgess Bianas of Batesland, SD; 33 grandchildren and 14+ great grandchildren along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
