The Dupree Tigers brought home their first Little Moreau Conference title in 21 years after defeating the Faith Longhorns 51-38 in the championship game on Saturday night in Lemmon. The Tigers haven’t won the title since 1992. The Tigers lost to the Longhorns in last year’s championship 42-64. Dupree defeated the Tiospaye Topa Thunderhawks 70-32 in the opening round and the Timber Lake Panthers 47-41 in the semifinals to advance to the championship. With the three victories in the tournament, the Tigers move to 14-1 on the season with five games remaining before Districts. Dupree hits the road this week, traveling to take on District 15 contender Wakpala Sioux on Tuesday and to Philip on Saturday.

LMC Championship

The Tigers jumped out to a 14-11 first quarter lead in the contest and extended their lead to six at the half 25-19. In the third quarter Hoss Rave came off the bench and hit a pair of treys and Kash Deal hit two free throws to push the Tigers lead to 37-28. Jarius Halligan hit a pair of free throws to bring the Longhorns back within seven to close out the third quarter. The Tigers’ defense allowed the Longhorns only eight points in the final quarter and scored 14 points to secure the win and the conference championship, defeating Faith for the second time this season.

The Tigers were hit with a couple of injuries last week with starter Tate Widow suffering a knee injury in the semifinal match with Timber Lake and Creighton LeBeau was out with a sprained ankle. Both players are recovering and expected to return before the end of the season.

“With Tate and Creighton out, we had to go to the bench and Seth (Longbrake), Hoss (Rave), and Dayton (Spiel) really stepped up,” said Head Coach Jim Hood. “Hoss played a great defensive game.” The Tigers defeated the Longhorns two weeks ago after Nate Widow lit them up with 32 points. In the championship match, Faith put the pressure on Widow figuring they’d stop Dupree’s offensive attack but was not ready for the rest of the Tigers to take control. “They really played him (Widow),” said Hood. “But we really stepped up”. Deal led the team with 13 points including hitting eight of eight from the free throw line. Widow finished with 11 points scoring seven in the fourth quarter. Trenton Pretty Weasel finished the game with nine points and Longbrake hit a pair of threes finishing with eight points. Rave finished with six and Jeffrie Shaving and Dayton Spiel each finished with two points. Cody Trainor led the Longhorns with 16 points.

Semifinals

The Tigers faced the Panthers of Timber Lake in the semifinal match and found themselves in unfamiliar territory this season, playing from behind as the Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the Tigers early on. The Tigers came back to tie Timber Lake at seven to close out the first quarter. The Panthers outscored the Tigers in the second quarter 20-12 to take an eight-point lead at half.

The Tigers struggled to find some offense in the first half as nothing hit, shooting only 29% from the field. “We are going to have those games, when nothing works,” said Coach Hood. The Tigers continued to trail as the Panthers hung on to their seven-point lead through the third quarter. The Tigers’ offense rallied in the fourth, outscoring Timber Lake 20-7 to come back and defeat Timber Lake 47-41.

“I’m really proud of the boys, they never hung their heads but continued to work all the way to the end.”

Nate Widow finished the game with 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kash Deal finished with nine points and Seth Longbrake netted eight points. Kellon Lawrence finished with 14 points and Kyle Schumacher added 12 for Timber Lake.
