Dorothy Webb Redfish


Dorothy-Redfish-RGBDorothy Webb Redfish passed away February 9. 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Arlington, SD, where she has resided for the past six years.

She was born March 20, 1914 at home in the Cherry Creek District of the Cheyenne River Reservation, the eldest of five children of Harry and Louise Webb.

She attended many of the Indian schools in the state, graduating from Flandreau Indian School and going on to graduate from Huron College, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Home Economics, with a teaching certificate.

She spent her life teaching Native American students in North Carolina, Oklahoma and Montana, before coming back to South Dakota, where she taught at a number of schools on the Rosebud Reservation, Marty Mission on the Yankton Reservation, and then Oglala Community School in Pine Ridge.

Redfish retired from Oglala Community School, but soon was back at Rosebud, teaching Head Start for 10 years. She once again retired, but again in the fall became a teacher’s aide at the Rosebud Elementary School, where she served for five years before retiring for good in the early 1980’s.

While teaching at the Black Pipe School on the Rosebud Reservation, she met and married Emil Redfish in December of 1941. They had three children: Amiel Redfish, Carla Redfish Brewer and Eldon Redfish.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Emil, her daughter Carla, her brothers Robert and Albert, and a sister, Carmen.

She is survived by a brother, Orville (Irene) Webb of Milbank; sons Amiel in Arlington and Eldon in Rosebud, 13 grandchildren, 21 great- grandchildren, and two great- great-grandsons.

A viewing was held in Arlington on Tuesday at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m.

Her wake will be held at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Rosebud, Thursday, Feb. 14, with funeral services to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday Feb. 15, 2013, at St. Bridget’s. Burial will be in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, in St. Francis.
