TeamThe C-EB Lady Braves cap¬tured the District 11A title last Thursday night in Mobridge, defeating the McLaughlin Lady Midgets 50-44 in overtime. Not since the 2008-09 season have the Lady Braves held the title. C-EB has played for the champion¬ship every year since, but came up short against Mobridge each year. The 11-8 Lady Braves have been the districts’ top seeded team throughout the season, while the 10-8 Lady Midgets stayed right on their heels. C-EB defeated McLaughlin in their season opener 65-63.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” said Head Coach Jessie Mendoza. “McLaughlin is a good team, and they played us well. It could’ve went either way, but the girls hung in there.”

The Lady Braves will now contend for the Region 6A title this Friday night in Gettysburg against Chamberlain. The Lady Cubs finished 19-1 this season and ended the year ranked fourth. “They have more to lose than we do,” said Mendoza. “We just got to play hard and go get them.”

Angela Ducheneaux hit three consecutive three pointers in the first quarter of the district cham¬pionship game to help push C-EB to a 13-7 first quarter lead on the Lady Midgets. The second quar¬ter saw a balanced effort as six C-EB players added to the score and outgunned the Lady Midgets 14-10 increasing the first half lead to ten, 27-17.

The third quarter started slow as both teams combined for only seven points in the first four and a half minutes of play. With 1:52 left in the 3rd, the Lady Braves led by ten points but the Lady Midgets rallied on a 6-1 scoring run to pull within five points to close out the quarter.

In the opening minute of the fourth quarter, the Lady Braves pushed their lead to seven, but the Lady Midgets took off on a 7-4 run to pull within two points of C-EB with 4:11 left in the game. C-EB responded scoring seven unanswered points to push the lead back to seven with 1:53 left. The Lady Midgets weren’t ready to give up and rallied back with seven unanswered points of their own as Shayla Gayton tied the game at 42 and was fouled with 32 seconds left in the game. With an opportunity to take the lead, Gayton couldn’t convert the three-point play and the game re¬mained tied as time expired and the game went into overtime.

In overtime, the Lady Braves made six of nine free throws and the Lady Midgets could only make two of their own as the Lady Braves pulled away for the District Championship.

“We made some key free throws in overtime,” said Mendoza. “Angela (Ducheneaux) had a big game, giving us a big boost with those threes in the first half.”

Ducheneaux and Kaleb Shep¬herd led C-EB with 12 points each. Nelly Dupris finished with 8 and River Gunville scored 7 points for the Lady Braves. Shay¬la Gayton led the Lady Midgets with 12 points followed by Bobbi Jamerson with 11 points.
