Mary D. Smith
Mary D. Smith, age 91, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, surrounded by her children, on Friday, February 22, 2013 at the Christian Health Care Center in Lynden.
Born January 5, 1922 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, she was the daughter of Clyde and Della Libolt. Mary grew up in Eagle Butte where she graduated from high school and went on to college to receive her teaching degree. She taught grades 1-8 in a small country school. On February 12, 1946 she married the love of her life, Harold D. Smith. In 1952 Mary and Harold moved their family to Lynden where Mary always welcomed all the neighborhood children into their home on the Glendale Pavement (Main St.). In the early 1960’s Mary and Harold began operating a dairy farm on the Pole Road and later moved back to Lynden to enjoy their retirement together and once again she opened her home and heart to the neighborhood.
A member of the First Reformed Church in Lynden, Mary was a quiet, gentle lady known for her constant smile. She loved her church family and served faithfully in many different areas.
She also felt blessed to be able to volunteer at the Christian Health Care Center for 25 years. Mary will be remembered by her grandchildren for all the love and time she gave to each one of them.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Harold in 2007; a very dear daughter-in-law Carol Smith, three brothers and five sisters.
She is survived by her children: Jim and fiancé Donna Boulton; Jeanne (Mick) Van Dalen, Audrey (Gordon) Neevel and Cindy (Gerald) Norris. Fifteen grandchildren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; brother Jack (Gladys) Libolt of Lynden and numerous other relatives.
Visitation hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Memorial funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 2:00 p.m. in the First Reformed Church in Lynden. Burial will precede in Monumenta Cemetery at 1:15 p.m.
