Braves lose battle with Tigers in double OT

The C-EB Braves season came to an end Saturday night as they faced the Mobridge-Pollock Tigers in the District 11A Championship. The Braves lost the battle in double overtime 87-77.

The Tigers started the contest with a 5-2 run Braves, before the Braves jumped on a 9-2 run of their own fueled by a trey by Xavier Norris and Cray Allen to take a 11-7 lead on the Tigers.

The Tigers scored five unanswered points to finish out the quarter with a one-point lead, 12-11.

The Tigers outscored the Braves in the second quarter 19-7 leading as much as 16 with 1:22 on the clock. The Braves scored five points in the last minute to cut the lead to 13, 31-18 at halftime.

The Braves scored 19 points to the Tigers 20 points in the third quarter, as the Tigers increased their lead by one 51-37.

The Tigers opened the fourth quarter on a 5-3 run to take a 16-point lead with 5:45 left in the game. Cray Allen hit a three and Brockton Viet drew a foul and hit both free throws to cut the lead to 11, 56-45 with 5:12 left. Xavier Norris drew his fourth foul sending Cody Schaefbauer to the line with 4:58 left in the game. Schaefbauer made both shots to take the Tigers back to 13 points up.

With 4:26 left in the game Cory Knight hit a three to spark a 9-1 run for the Braves to pull back within five points with 3:06 left on the clock.

The Tigers would score again to put their lead back to seven. Cray Allen drew a foul and made both shots to pull C-EB back to four. Xavier Norris stole the ball at midcourt and scored on a layup to bring the Braves to three points with 2:21 remaining. Cray Allen hit a three to tie the game at 61 with a little more than 2:00 minutes remaining. Cray Allen drew his fifth foul sending the Tigers’ Daniel Roberts to the line. Roberts made one of two to put the Tigers up by one, 62-61. The score remained the same for the next minute and half and with 16.7 seconds left, Pearson Wientjes was on the line. Wientjes made both shots to take the Tigers to a three-point lead 64-61. For the second year in a row, Xavier Norris hit a three with 1.7 seconds remaining to tie the Tigers 64-64 to send the game into overtime.

In overtime the Tigers jumped out to a 70-66 lead with 1:45 remaining in the overtime. With 1:08, Cory Knight hit a three to pull back within one point. Zach Dockter hit one of two bonus shots to take the Tigers to a one-point lead with 44 seconds remaining. Seven Annis hit a basket with 11 seconds remaining to tie the game back at 71 to send the game into double overtime.

In double overtime with four of the Braves starters fouled out of the game, the Tigers pulled away from the Braves to win the District Championship 87-77.

“I’d like commend our kids,” said Head Coach Rob Mendoza. “It was a great effort to erase a 13 point deficit in four and a half minutes. I’m very proud of them. I’d like to also thank the fans”, added Mendoza. “As a former Braves player, I do believe that we have the loudest and most loyal fans around.”

The Braves finished with three players in double digit scoring. Cray Allen and Xavier Norris finished with 22 points each. Cory Knight finished with four three pointers for 12 points. Wyatt Knight finished with seven points and Seven Annis put up six points. Nolan Keckler, Justin LaPlante, Derrick Marrow, and Brockton Viet finished with two points each. The Braves were 7 of 15 from the line and finished with 37 team fouls, with five players fouling out and 22 turnovers.

Mitch Heumiller led the Tigers with 21 points. Daniel Roberts finished with 16 points and Zach Dockter and Pearson Wientjes finished with 15 points each. The Tigers went to the line a whopping 53 times and hit 40 free throws for 75% shooting. The Tigers finished with 16 team fouls and 25 turnovers.
