Pretty Weasel home engulfed by fire

Share

At 7:02 p.m. Saturday a call came in to the Eagle Butte Volunteer Fire Department that a home in southeast Eagle Butte was on fire. Eagle Butte Fire Chief Rick Neigel reported that it started on the outside wall of the southside of the home tracking up the wall, into the sofet and on into the attic burning the whole top of the single family dwelling.

Chief Chad Olson of the CRST Law Enforcement says the occupants lost some of their belongings in the fire, which he says caused extensive damage to the home.  No other structures were threatened.  Firefighters worked about three hours to put out the blaze, which Neigel believes caused about $50,000 damage.

The Pretty Weasel family was attending the State B Tournament in Aberdeen at the time, but there were occupants in the home at the time. Olson did not identify them, but says the tribe is working to arrange for a temporary residence for them. Said occupants were not injured in the blaze.

A fundraiser was held for the family Sunday at Dupree High School in conjunction with the welcome home Tigers celebrtion. The booster club organized a T-shirt auction and gathered in the area of $2600 in donations for the family. Trenton Pretty Weasel is a member of the DHS Tiger Basketball team which made it to State playoffs this season.

Three other fires, involving grass and hay bales, also occurred between Friday night and Saturday keeping the fire departments busy battling the blazes and winds during the weekend.
