Johanna Maria Antonia Peep (Ria), 93 of Spearfish, passed away quietly in her sleep on October 22, 2013.

Ria was born June 13, 1920 in Schoonhoven, (Holland) Netherlands to Johannis and Johanna (vanHonsewijk)Wewer.  Ria was the oldest of seven children.  Her family moved several times while she was growing up and it was while living in Doorn, Netherlands at the end of WWII that she met Staff Sgt. Charles L. Peep of Gettysburg, SD.  They fell in love and married on December 28, 1945.  Ria soon found herself on a “war bride” ship headed for the U.S.

Charles and Ria lived for a few years in Rapid City, SD while Charles completed his degree at SDSMT.  The couple then moved to Gettysburg, SD where they farmed for many years and raised 13 children.  Many of those years were without the benefit of running water and indoor plumbing.  During their 59 year marriage, Charles and Ria moved several times, also living in Eagle Butte, SD, St. Joseph, MN, Juneau, AK, and Fairbanks, AK, before settling in Spearfish.  Wherever they lived, Ria was an active volunteer in her community and after the children were grown, became a master gardener and an accomplished quilter.  She especially loved working at the Georgeson Botanical Gardens on the UAF campus in Fairbanks and spending time with her quilting group.  Ria was an avid reader and instilled a great love of books/reading in all of her children.

Ria is survived by her children, Jeanette (Gene) Grasto, Florence Boyd, Charles A. (Tony) Peep, John Peep, Eric (Marlyn) Peep, Timothy Peep, Patricia Peep (Dennis Dunbar), Michael Peep, Geraldine Maltaverne, Susan Peep and Johanna (Tim) Gregoire; 14 grand-children; 7 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rudolf (An) Wewer, Ton (Henny) Wewer; two sisters, Jearda Veldman, and Elisabeth (Louis) Naarstig; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Charles; one brother, Hans Wewer; one sister, Anny (Wewer) Peterse; and two children, Mary Peep and Dana R. Peep.

Memorial services will be Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 11:00 am, at Sacred Heart Church in Gettysburg, SD, with Rev. Jerry Kopel presiding.  Inurnment will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.  The family invites you to join them afterwards for a luncheon at Sacred Heart Church Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Northern Hills, 1440 N. Main Street, Spearfish, SD  57783.
