Karen Sue Yellow Earring


Funeral services for Karen Sue Yellow Earring, 42, of Eagle Butte, were Saturday, December 28, at 11:00 a.m., at the Lakota Cultural Center, Eagle Butte, with Mother Margaret Watson, Rev. Norman Blue Coat, Sister Addie Morris and the Episcopal Lay Readers officiating. Music was provided by Daryl Whipple. Burial followed at St. James Episcopal Cemetery, Bear Creek. Meet at the 4-mile Jct. at 4:00 p.m. Friday to process to the cultural center for an all-night wake with services beginning at 7:00 p.m.. Karen Sue entered the spirit world December 20, 2013, in Eagle Butte. Stout Family Funeral Home, Mobridge.

Karen Sue Yellow Earring was born February 24, 1971, in Eagle Butte, S.D. to Larry Cook and Marcella Yellow Earring.  She had one brother, Jesse Cook, Jr. She attended school in Eagle Butte, Pierre Indian Learning Center, Glasgow, MT and Job Corps in Kicking Horse, MT.

Karen worked for a time at the Elderly Nutrition Center. In 1992, Karen married James Bagola and to this union one daughter was born, Megan. Karen later met Richard Scares The Hawk and to this union two daughters were born, Destiney and Dessa. Karen loved to visit with family and friends and always had a smile for everyone. She enjoyed music by Alice in Chains and loved to bead earrings.

Karen is survived by her daughters, Megan Mae Bagola, Destiney and Dessa Scares The Hawk; mother, Marcella Yellow Earring; brother, Jesse Cook, Sr; uncles, Franklin Counting, Lonzo Yellow Earring, Leslie, Allen and Kay Cook, Homer, Sr., Dennis and Ronald Cook, Sr. and Robert Yellow Earring; aunties, Elaine Cook Benoist, Betty Cook and Lynn and Darla Yellow Earring.

Karen was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Dorothy Counting and Andrew Yellow Earring; paternal grandparents, John and Mary Cook; father, Larry Cook; sister, Marella Yellow Earring; brothers, Larry “John Boy” and  Allen Yellow Earring.
