Chauncey Wade Iron Wing

Chauncey Wade Iron Wing was born November 15, 1956, at Old Cheyenne Agency, South Dakota to Gilford and Pearl (Defender) Iron Wing. Chauncey was raised in Whitehorse, attending his early years of school in Whitehorse, later attending Eagle Butte Boarding School where he stayed in the dorms. Chauncey was always looking for something to do other than hang around the house. He liked helping out area ranchers do chores. That would give him some candy, pop and chips money. He also enjoyed picking wild cherries, plums, currants and wild turnips and playing a little cards. In the winter, he’d help chop wood and haul water and loved to mess around with horses, even getting bucked off quite a few times, but he was learning. He also learned a lot by helping ranchers in Whitehorse and Promise, especially Debbie and Roman Ducheneaux.  Chauncey, or Clance, as he was sometimes known, liked to travel after growing up, and made his way to Springfield, Missouri to stay with his sister, Marlene and husband Gene Taber. He learned to work with concrete laying sidewalks and driveways. He also traveled to Fayetteville, Tennessee with his Aunt Lucille Towry. In his later years, Chauncey resided in Eagle Butte where he had friends and enjoyed walking around Eagle Butte. He enjoyed sitting in the tribal office visiting and having coffee. Driving down Main Street, you’d often get a glimpse of Chauncey visiting or just walking. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Those left to mourn his passing include his siblings, Gilford “Jughead” (Darla) Iron Wing, McLaughlin, SD, Renee Iron Wing, McLaughlin, SD, Hazel (Andrew) Traversie, Whitehorse, SD and Carrie Iron Wing, Whitehorse, SD. Also surviving is his daughter, Annie Nichols of Eagle Butte; grandchildren, Dayson Kennedy (8), Ava Pearman (3) and the twins, Chance and Chase Bordeaux (6 months) along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to list. Chauncey was preceded in death by his parents, Gilford and Pearl Iron Wing; a son in infancy, Randolph James Ridley and siblings, Robert, Morris and Marty Iron Wing and Georgianne Claymore and Debbie Ducheneaux.
