Sister Francis Mary Dunn, 81, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died February 10, 2014, at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, S.D.

Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Francis Mary was Friday, February 14, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen.   Reverend Joseph Sheehan, was the celebrant and homilist. Scriptural wake service was Thursday, February 13, at 7:00 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel.  Visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen in charge of arrangements.

Alice was born April 22, 1932, in St. Paul, M.N. to Frances (Burke) and John Joseph Dunn.  She completed her grade school education at Notre Dame Academy, Mitchell, SD and graduated from Notre Dame High School, Mitchell, S.D., in 1950. She received a Teacher Certificate in 1951 at Notre Dame Junior College, taught for one year in a small country school north of Lantry and then in Lantry, S.D .for another year.  Alice entered Presentation Convent on November 29, 1953, and pronounced her first profession of vows on August 10, 1956.  She attended Presentation College and Northern State University,  received a bachelor’s degree  in English from St. Louis University, Mo. in 1958.  She went on to receive a master’s degree in English, 1961, and a PhD, 1966, from Catholic University of America, Washington, DC.

Sister Francis Mary’s devoted her life to the education of students for 53 years.  All of these years were dedicated to her being an instructor for Presentation College, with the brief exception of teaching at St. Mary’s in Willmar, M.N. for one semester, 1962-1963.  During her tenure at Presentation College, Sister Francis Mary served as an instructor, college president, English faculty member, provost, councilor, assistant professor of English, tutor and finally having been bestowed by the Presentation College with the prestigious honor of Emeritus Status.

Her passion for helping others, her friendly smile, gentle demeanor and humble heart will leave a lasting impression on all who knew her.  She traveled abroad with her brother John and especially loved her trips to Ireland.

Sister Francis Mary is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters, many cousins including Leo Burke, Columbia Heights, MN, Judy (John) Lemke, Lantry, SD, William McDaniel, Gilbert AZ, Bill and Marion McDaniel, Spearfish, SD and Jack Kuhl.   She is preceded in death by her parents, Frances and John, and one brother, John Dunn.

Memorials preferred to the Sister Francis Mary Dunn Endowed Scholarship Fund at Presentation College.

Family members will serve as active pall bearers.

There was reserved seating for Convent and College employees, past and present Presentation Board of Trustees and past and present Presentation College students.
