Clarence Runs After, Jr.


Funeral services for Clarence Runs After, Jr., 58, of Eagle Butte, were Saturday, March 29, at 11:00 a.m., MDT, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Eagle Butte with Mother Margaret Watson and the Episcopal lay readers officiating. Music was provided by Daryl Whipple and Wakinyan Maza Drum Group. Burial followed at Eagle Butte Cemetery. Serving as casketbearers were Aaron Runs After, Brazen Runs After, Gordon Runs After, Jr., Charles Swallow, Terrance Gutierrez, Patrick Rivers, Toom Sands, Terry Collinsk, Calvin Edwards and Kenneth West, Jr. We met at the 4-mile Jct. at 5:00 p.m. Friday to proceed to the church for wake services beginning at 7:00 p.m.. Clarence entered the spirit world March 24, 2014 in Eagle Butte as a result of a car accident.

Clarence E. Runs After, Jr. was born in Pierre, S.D., to Clarence E. Runs After, Sr. and Elnora (Pretty Bear) Runs After. When Clarence was a child, the family moved around because of his dad’s work, living at Old Cheyenne Agency, Pine Ridge and Los Angeles, California. Clarence has been affectionately referred to as Jr. throughout his life by friends and family.

Early in his years, Clarence Jr. earned a degree from Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  This achievement led to a long career of employment with the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Health Services and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in a variety of professional capacities.  He also served in the United States Army and was stationed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center as a personnel clerk.  Through his career and years of travel he lived in South Dakota, Washington, D.C., New Mexico, and California.  Clarence Jr. enjoyed spending time with his family, many cousins and friends.  He also enjoyed taking a cruise and loved to drive as long as there was good music to listen to.  Clarence Jr. had a kind ear and a gentle laugh.  He will be sorely missed.

Clarence Jr. is survived by his mother Elnora (Pretty Bear) Runs After; siblings Cheryl Lopez, Patricia Gross (Andy), Sandra Madrid (Manuel), and Randolph Runs After; children, Kara Four Bear (Jeffrey), Sandra Wayne, Clarence Runs After, III, Justine Gutierrez, Carlos Runs After and Terrance Gutierrez (Angel) along with grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Clarence Jr. was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Runs After, Sr.; brother, Gordon Runs After, Sr.; sister, Janice Runs After and son, Levi Runs After.
