The Funeral Service for Roald Mitchell, age 86 of Dupree, was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the United Church of Christ in Dupree. Pastor Pauline Webb officiated with burial in the Dupree Cemetery.
The Ushers were Rick Farlee and Troy Wall. Serving as Honorary Casketbearers were Addie, Emma, Delilah and Arianna Weaver, Teagan Longbrake, Henry Johnson, Kenliegh Michalson, and all of Roald’s friends and relatives.
Serving as Active Casketbearers were Cody, Cole, Clay, and Cassie Weaver, Jeff Henderson, Mardie Michalson, Callie Henderson, Mitch and Barry Johnson, Tate, Kirby, and Seth Longbrake, Jodie Henderson and Ellen Johnson†.
Roald Herbert Mitchell was born on May 10, 1928, at Maple Grove, M.N. to Warren and Ragnhild (Pederson) Mitchell. Roald attended his first year of school in Maple Grove and then he returned home to the Mitchell family ranch. He finished his schooling at Sunny Brook rural school south of Dupree.
His father passed away at an early age and Roald became involved in the ranching business at the age of 14. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Stapert on June 27, 1956, at Sturgis, S.D. Five children were born to this union, Pam, Cindy, Bernie, Brenda and Dianna.
Roald devoted his time to the management of his ranching operation up to the time of his death. He loved taking his dogs riding on the 4-wheeler.
He always looked forward to the brandings and working cattle because he loved to visit with everyone who helped. He was especially proud of his grand and great grandchildren.
Roald passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the Avera Maryhouse Long Term Care in Pierre, SD.
Grateful for having share his life are his wife, Bonnie, Dupree, SD; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Bernie and Janice Mitchell, Dupree, SD; 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Bill Henderson, Dupree, SD; Cindy and Casey Weaver, Wall, SD; Brenda and Doug Johnson, Peidmont, SD; Dianna and Mike Longbrake, Howes, SD; 12 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 granddaughters, Jodie Henderson and Ellen Johnson, and his sister and brother-in-law, Ida and Tillier Wicks.
Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Faith Area Memorial Chapel in Faith, S.D.
