Stella Rose Buffalo (Eagle Horse)


Funeral services for Stella Rose Buffalo (Eagle Horse), 78, of Eagle Butte, were Monday, July 21, at 11:00 a.m., at the Lakota Cultural Center, Eagle Butte. Burial followed at Bridger Congregational Cemetery under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home, Mobridge & Eagle Butte. Met at the 4-mile Jct. at 5:00 p.m. Sunday to process to the center for wake services beginning at 7:00 p.m. Stella entered the spirit world July 16, 2014, in Eagle Butte.

Stella Rose Buffalo “O’iye Ki’cun Win” was born July 4, 1936, in Bridger, S.D., to James Buffalo, Sr. and Sarah Stella New Black Bear and entered the spirit world July 16, 2014, at the IHS Hospital in Eagle Butte, S.D.

Stella resided in Bridger, S.D., from birth until she graduated from high school. She received her High School Diploma from the Old Agency School in 1956. Stella then traveled to Phoenix, AZ, to attend school to become a Bible School Instructor. She returned home to Bridger, shortly after moving to Cherry Creek, S.D., with her four sons, Carlton Buffalo, Shane, Shawn and Samuel Eagle Horse. Stella resided in Eagle Butte, S.D., at the time of her death.

Stella had many hobbies, making star quilts, making shawls and beading. Sewing was a big part of her life. She liked to attend Bingo and visit friends. In her younger days she enjoyed riding horses. Most of all, she loved to spend time with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Stella was employed in various jobs, a CHR in Bridger, housekeeping at the Eagle Butte IHS and worked at the Children’s Shelter in Eagle Butte.

Stella is survived by her long time companion, Harvey Eagle Horse; baby sister, Violet Colleen Lone Eagle; adopted brother, Leonard Crow Dog; sons, Carlton L. Buffalo, Shane L., Shawn L. and Samuel J. Eagle Horse; three hunka daughters, Rose Ina Strikes the Enemy, Sandra Buffalo DuBray and Serena Buffalo; 14 grandchildren, including two she was especially close to, Carlyss (Ason) and Carlyle (Kelly); 29 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stella was preceded in death by her parents, James Buffalo, Sr. and Sarah New Black Bear, siblings, James Jr., Theodore, Dorothy and Mercy Buffalo and Don Standing Buffalo.
