Tigers defeat Faith, return to state
By Ross DuBray
After finishing 7th at last years State B, tournament the Dupree Tigers set a goal last year to return to the big show again this season, and return they did after defeating the Faith Longhorns in the Region 7B Championship 66-51 last night in Mobridge. Dupree set the stage in the regular season, racking up 19 wins and one loss. That one loss came from the North Star Bearcat team out of North Dakota at the NSU Classic in December. At the time, North Star was the number one Class B school in North Dakota and defeated the Tigers by five points. Since then the Tiger have won 22 straight games and earned the #3 seed in the Class B State Tournament in Aberdeen on March 14-16, 2013. In the first round, the Tigers will face the Arlington Cardinals on Thursday at 7:45pm CDT.
Last night’s matchup has been anticipated all season and has been in the making since last year when the Tigers upset the Longhorns in overtime in the Region final. The Tigers had previously defeated the Longhorns twice this year, once during the regular season and in the Little Moreau Conference championship. The Longhorns have been looking to derail the Tigers since with no luck. “We played hard tonight but we came up short,” said Faith Head Coach, Doug Schauer. “We gave them all they probably wanted this game, but we didn’t quite have enough. I hope they represent this region well at state.”
The Longhorns struck early jumping out to a 4-7 lead before Kash Deal hit a three to even the game at seven. A pair of free throws by Reggie Rhoden and a field goal by Cody Trainor took the Longhorns back out to an 7-11 lead, which would be the last time the Longhorns would hold the lead. Jeffrie Shaving sparked a 10-0 Tiger run to capture the lead at 17-11. Trainor scored two for the Longhorns but Trenton Pretty Weasel found himself wide open beyond the ark and nailed a three. Josh Afdahl would score once more for the Longhorns to close out the first quarter, with the Tigers leading 20-15.
Dayton Spiel got the Tigers on the scoreboard in the second quarter. The 6’3 center hit a field goal from underneath and made one of two from the line to push Dupree’s lead to seven. Dupree would outscore Faith 16-14 to take a seven-point lead into halftime.
Reggie Rhoden scored three points to open up the third quarter to pull the Longhorns to within four; however Nate Widow responded with four points of his own and Kash Deal found Seth Longbrake down low to pull Dupree back up to a ten point lead. Trainor led Faith on an 8-2 run to pull the Longhorns back within four once again, but a pair of free throws from Hoss Rave and back to back buckets by Nate Widow put the Tigers back up by ten at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The Tigers would make 12 of 16 free throws and Jeffrie Shaving made two field goals in the fourth quarter to keep the game out of reach of the Longhorns as Dupree outscored Faith 16-11 to win the Region 8B championship for the second year and a row.
The Tigers were led by Nate Widow, who finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Kash Deal finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Jeffrie Shaving and Trenton Pretty Weasel each finished with 8 points. The Tigers made 21 of 50 from the field and 21 of 29 from the charity stripe.
Cody Trainor led all scorers with 26 points and Reggie Rhoden added 13 points to the effort. The Longhorns were solid behind the free throw line making 13 of 16 for an 81% average.
“Faith’s got a good team,” said Dupree Head Coach Jim Hood. “We came out and we just had to do what we’ve been doing all year, and that was to play our game. We tried to cut down on our mistakes and capitalize on anything that we could get from Faith. It was a good game, everybody played hard and we took care of the ball. “
The Tigers did take care of the ball only giving up 5 turnovers all evening. The Tigers finished with 16 team fouls compared to 20 committed by Faith.
