Shannon Lee Lawrence was born July 27th 1978 in Sioux Falls, SD to Justin and Jenny (Lind) Lawrence. He was the youngest of four boys. Shannon spent his younger days in the White Horse, SD area and attended the White Horse Day School and later graduated from Cheyenne Eagle Butte in 1997.
While in high school, Shannon stayed in the dorms, where he met a numerous amount of his life-long friends. After high school, he moved in with his cousin who he considered his brother, Dawson Gunville. He resided with the Romey and Joyce Gunville family and they took him in as their own.
In 2001, he met a very special friend, Patty Knight. He then moved to Ash Creek until the time of his death. He became very close with Patty’s children and helped raise her two little boys. Shannon instilled his cowboy ways into Rylee and William. He also took on Patty’s brothers, Nick, Pete, and Deb as his own. He leaves behind his dog, Charly and horse, Tobassco.
Shannon comes from a big extended family, but he was the baby of his family. He made trips home often to check in and loved being around his parents, big brothers, sister-in-laws, and especially, his nieces and nephews. He had a nickname for every one of them. He always helped his Dad, Grandpa Clarence, and Uncles, whether it be brandings, moving cows, cutting studs or other ranching duties. HE SAID HE WAS THE REAL COWBOY OF THE FAMILY!
Shannon was a well-known ranch hand around Eagle Butte and the surrounding areas. During this time, he acquired the nickname, “Tall Horse” from Bob Keck. He was always willing to help anybody, no matter what it was. He never complained or said no, he just did it. He loved horses, bucking horses, and rodeo. He helped Georgie, Glen, Chipper, and Harley Gunville with their bucking stock, as well as many other local stock contractors. Ed Widow had a top notch bronc named Cherry Creek Kid. When Shannon would help Ed and Norris with the bucking horses he would say “One of these days, I’m gonna saddle up Cherry Creek Kid and go pick choke cherries!” He had a one of kind sense of humor that we are all going to miss.
