Lady Braves fall to Tigers in Finals

The Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Lady Braves Volleyball team competed in the District 11A Volleyball Tournament in Mobridge on Thursday, November 1. The Lady Braves won their opening match against the McLaughlin Midgets 3-2. Game scores were 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15 and 15-2. Sam Bowker led the Lady Braves in serving making 18 of 19 with five aces and Tatum Mendoza made 19 of 19 with two aces. Nelly Dupris led the Braves with 22 of 28 attacks with 19 kills and Marquel Shepherd finished with 14 of 16 with 10 kills. Sam Bowker completed 43 of 43 sets with 10 assists and Kali Hale made 22 of 23 with 7 assists.
With the win over McLaughlin, the Lady Braves advanced to the Championship game against the top seeded Mobridge/Pollock Tigers who cruised past the Stanley County Buffalo’s 3 – 0 in the second match of the tournament.
The Braves lead early in each game, but the Tigers strong offensive attack brought them back to pick up the win 11-25, 18-25 and 17-25. With the win, the Tigers move on to Region 6 championship game against the Miller Rustlers.
“Each time we had the lead or went on a run the Tigers would answer with a quick 3 – 4 point run. Our coverage was good but our timing at the net was off.”
Individual leaders against Mobridge were Tatum Mendoza in serving making 8 of 9 and Sam Bowker set eight of ten with two aces. Nelly Dupris was 10 of 10 on attacks with 6 kills and Marquel Shepherd 4 of 4 with 3 kills. Kali Hale finished the match completing 16 of 16 sets with three assists.
The Lady Braves finished the season with a record of 15 – 15. “We had a very good season; the coaching staff was proud of our team’s efforts and improvements throughout the volleyball season.”
